Now I have all four readings for the week:
- Old Testament: Isaiah 58:1-9a (9b-12) - True fasting through justice and mercy
- Psalm: Psalm 112:1-9 (10) - The blessed person who fears the LORD
- Epistle: 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 (13-16) - God’s wisdom revealed through the Spirit
- Gospel: Matthew 5:13-20 - Salt and light, fulfilling the Law
Now I’ll generate the Friday chapel reflection that brings all four readings together.
Opening Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for teaching us this week. Help us remember what we learned and carry it in our hearts. Amen.
Scripture: Isaiah 58, Psalm 112, 1 Corinthians 2, Matthew 5
This week we heard four readings that all fit together like pieces of a puzzle:
- Monday we heard from Isaiah about what makes God happy—not just going through the motions of being religious, but actually helping people who need help.
- Tuesday we heard a Psalm about what a blessed person looks like—someone whose heart is steady because they trust in God.
- Wednesday we heard Paul say something surprising—that he came to share about Jesus not with fancy words, but with trembling and weakness.
- Thursday we heard Jesus tell his followers something amazing: “You ARE the salt of the earth. You ARE the light of the world.”
What This Means
Here’s the puzzle: How do these four pieces fit together?
Think about salt. What does salt do? It makes food taste better. It keeps meat from going bad. Salt is different from what it touches—and that’s what makes it useful.
Now think about a flashlight in a dark room. The light doesn’t try to be bright. It just IS bright. You flip the switch and—there it is. Light.
This week God showed us that He doesn’t want us pretending to be good while ignoring people who need help. That’s like salt that doesn’t taste like anything anymore. Useless! He wants something different.
God’s way looks foolish to the world. A king born in a barn? A Savior dying on a cross? Teachers who come trembling instead of bragging? It doesn’t make sense—unless you have the Spirit showing you. Then you see: this is how God works. Through weakness. Through giving. Through love.
And here’s the best part: Jesus didn’t say “TRY to be salt” or “WORK HARDER to be light.” He said “You ARE.” He makes you what you are. You don’t have to earn it.
Let’s Talk About It
Eberley: Why do you think God works through weakness and foolishness instead of power and impressiveness? What does that tell us about who He is?
Sonja: This week we heard about salt that loses its taste. Can you think of a time someone said they were going to help but then didn’t? How did that feel?
Dahlia & Freddy: Jesus says you are like a bright light. Who can see your light at home? At church?
Remember This
Jesus makes us salt and light—we don’t have to become something we’re not.
Closing Prayer
Thank you, Jesus, for making us who we are. Thank you that we don’t have to pretend or earn Your love. Help us shine this week—not by trying harder, but by staying close to You. Amen.
