I have the research for February 8, 2026. For Tuesday, I need to generate a chapel devotion based on the Psalm reading, which is Psalm 112:1-9 (10).
Opening Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for this new day. Help us to hear your Word and trust you more. Amen.
Scripture: Psalm 112:1-9
Blessed is the person who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land; each generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.
Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.
They have scattered abroad their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever.
What This Means
Have you ever been scared of the dark? Maybe you heard a strange sound at night, or the shadows looked creepy. Darkness can be scary because we can’t see what’s there.
This psalm tells us about a person who isn’t afraid—not of the dark, not even of bad news. Why? Because they trust in God. Their heart is “steadfast,” which means it doesn’t wobble or shake. Like a big oak tree with deep roots that doesn’t fall over in the wind.
But here’s the surprising part. The psalm says “light dawns in the darkness” for this person. They don’t run away from dark places. The light comes to them, right where they are.
And notice what this person does: they give things away. They scatter their gifts to poor people. They share what they have. They’re generous. The psalm says their goodness lasts forever.
Now, can we make ourselves be like this person? Can we just decide to never be scared and always be generous? That’s hard. Really hard. The truth is, we get scared. We hold onto our stuff. We worry about bad news.
But God doesn’t leave us stuck there. Jesus came into our darkness. He gives us His own steadfast heart when we trust in Him. In baptism, He made you His child—and that’s something that lasts forever, just like the psalm says.
Let’s Talk About It
Eberley: The psalm says this person has “no fear of bad news.” What do you think makes the difference between someone who panics when bad things happen and someone who stays calm? Is it just being brave, or is it something else?
Eberley: Why do you think generosity and fearlessness go together in this psalm? What’s the connection between giving things away and not being afraid?
Sonja: What kinds of things make you scared? What do you think helps you feel brave?
Sonja: The psalm talks about someone who gives gifts to poor people. What’s something you could share with someone who needs it?
Dahlia & Freddy: Is it good to share with others? Does Jesus share with us?
Remember This
When we trust in Jesus, we don’t have to be afraid—even in the dark.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, sometimes we get scared and sometimes we hold onto our things too tightly. Thank you for giving us everything we need. Make our hearts strong and steady like a big tree. Help us share with others because you have shared so much with us. Amen.
